Since summer 2023, we at the Club of Rome – Austrian Chapter have been working on an Austria-wide campaign to implement a positive vision of the necessary transformation or, as written in the “Earth4All” report, a “Giant Leap” in Austria.
Visions:
A fossil-free, 100% renewable and truly carbon-neutral climate change-adapted energy system that is safe and fair for all – meaning accessibility on a non-discriminatory basis – and also creates added value for the population and the economy. Energy consumption has been reduced through efficiency measures and awareness of responsible energy use at all levels of society and the economy. Innovative and decentralized solutions, such as extensive electrification, cross-sector networking and prosumers, contribute to this success. Austria is not only a global role model, but is also a pioneer in the field of technology and a provider of flexibility in Europe. The expansion of the renewable energy system is taking place in coordination with the population and is conserving resources and land/nature, which benefits both the climate and nature.”
Levers and goals:
To achieve this, the Earth4All report talks about the familiar three levers, whereby special applications and necessities are of course taken into account in the field of electrification.
It is recommended:
- Reduce energy consumption: Mobility + buildings + heat etc., industry + sector coupling, energy and CO2 prices, energy balancing
- Increase efficiency and electrify (almost) everything: switch to renewable energy sources (incl. grids & storage), e-mobility, industrial sector
- Exponential growth of renewable energies: Expansion of renewables and electricity grids, energy spatial planning, awareness-raising
- Circular economy
Green energy for Austria’s economy and society:
This chapter deals with strategies for Austria’s transition to a sustainable energy system and once again emphasizes the need to switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources by 2050. The focus is on progress in photovoltaics and wind energy, as well as the importance of systemic efficiency and extensive investment in the necessary infrastructure. The chapter outlines the roles of economic actors, the impact of geopolitical factors on energy supply and the need for social participation and effective communication strategies.
Renewable energy:
On this page, we document relevant events and workshops, publish interviews and articles by qualified authors and will soon also present what we as the Club of Rome/Earth4All see as the consequences of this for Austria. We see all of this as contributions to a process that we believe should be initiated in Austria in the sense of an “energy turnaround”.

One Earth for All – Sustainable Energy for All
We need an Earth in which everyone can participate equally and on which everyone can feel comfortable and develop. And, of course, this includes ensuring that our planet continues to exist in its diversity and offers livable conditions – on all continents.

Hydrogen: Maghreb – EU Partnership?
A hydrogen cooperation between Tunisia and Austria has been announced to promote the production and use of hydrogen as a renewable energy source. The cooperation will also include the exchange of know-how and technology between the two countries.

For a cooperation at eye level
“It must be a real cooperation – also for the benefit of Africa,” said Hannes Swoboda on Jan. 30, 2023, at our event “European Partnerships for Green Hydrogen with Africa” in the Reiter Hall of the OeKB in Vienna.
