(Born 1946) was a member of the European Parliament and Vice-President of the S&D group from 1996-2012. He also served as President of the S&D group from 2012-2014. Hannes Swoboda studied law and economics at the University of Vienna from 1964-1972, and worked in the Vienna Chamber of Law from 1971-1986.
In 1983 he became a member of the Vienna State Parliament and City Council and was the executive city councilor for urban development and planning from 1988-1994, along with personnel, transport, and external relations for various periods.
Hannes Swoboda now works in several institutions, including as a board member of the Bruno Kreisky Forum for International Dialogue. Also, he is chairman of the board of the FH Campus Vienna – Association for the Promotion of the University of Applied Sciences Development and Research Center in the South of Vienna, and President of the Architecture Center Vienna.
